Word Wall
This week you can bring any item in that you would like and we will talk about the letter that it starts with.
This Week in the Sunshine Class
We will be playing with flubber and clay this week. We might even make some clean mud. We will only be creating art that can be taken home the day it’s made. We will also be having a “toy wash”. We will fill the sensory table up with Water and the children can help clean our toys. It’s amazing how much they love to help do this. We will also be having Ice Cream Sundaes for snack this week to celebrate the year together. If it’s nice we will do this on the Church’s front lawn.
A note from the teacher
Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for the gift cards, Marissa & I were both amazed and surprised! It was very thoughtful for you to all go together. We were truly blown away by it, thank you again!

It’s Playground Clean Up Day!! This Saturday May 30th from 9:00 to 11:00, you can help clean up our playground. If you haven’t put in your hour worth of volunteer work or even if you have it’s a great way to help your school community.
The End of the Year Picnic will be the last two days of school, June 11th & 12th at 9:30- 11:30 for the morning class and 12:30 – 2:30 for the afternoon classes. It is held at Felida Park in Hazel Dell. (Maps to come) There is a sign-up for both days, so if you come on both days we ask that you sign up for both days. Ideally it would be great if you could bring enough for everyone in our class plus an adult. If there happens to be two people signed up for an item you would only need to bring half that.

This week we will be exploring the outdoors and summertime fun. We will have a tent set up in by our “beach” in our classroom. I went to the beach this weekend and found some seaweed that I will be bringing in as well as beach sand for our sensory table. We are going to the Park on Thursday and Friday. We will take our snack over so we can have a picnic. We will be making an outdoor collage over there to bring back and we will have a story time over there in the grass under a big tree.

A note from the teacher
A big thank you to Leo’s Grandmother, Barbara for coming in and teaching the children the monster song. The children loved it!!
We are in need of your recycled goods for Summer Camp. We want to create some recycled art and a city out of recycled items. So anything you think we might want, we do!
Coming to a playground near you….. It’s Playground Clean Up Day!! So mark your calendars for Saturday May 30th and come and help clean up our playground. If you haven’t put in your hour worth of volunteer work or even if you have it’s a great way to help your school community. On a side note my family helped with the downtown clean up this weekend and honestly I didn’t really want to go but I thought it was a good way to show my daughter that we should be involved in our community. Once we got there and got going, it was a terrific experience. We meet new people and made the down town area look amazing. So even if you are feeling hesitant about making the effort, just do it! You’ll feel great about your efforts.

I want to thank Judith Freeman (Juliana’s Grandmother) for coming into our class on Wednesday and talking with us about Lilies. She kindly donated Lilies to our class for everyone to plant. Thank you so much for coming in and sharing your talents with us!
I also want to thank Cal-Portland for giving my husband Darrell the opportunity to bring his truck down and talking with the school about what it does. The children had a great time checking themselves out in the shiny wheelsJ.

Thank you!!
The Sunshine Class families ROCK!!!! Thank you so much for all that you do to make our school wonderful! Thank you to Jesse Weyrauch, Ava in the afternoon class’s Dad, for coming in and talking with us further about fire safety. Please speak with your children about what to do in case of an emergency and check the batteries in your fire alarms. If for some reason you don’t have a fire alarm, you can visit the fire station in your district and they will help you get one.
I also wanted to say thank you for being so understanding about my request to keep our classroom a little less crowded in the mornings during drop off time. It has made a big difference for the children that can be overwhelmed by all the people. So again thank you .
Warmer Weather
Bikes are out so remember to send your child’s helmet. With warmer weather I know that sandals are an easy option but we play in the rocks and sand a lot so if your child has a hard time walking in them it may be safer if they wear tennis shoes.

Brown Bags and Class Murals
Wow we got some great stuff in our brown bags!! Make sure you check out the color sorting we did, they are hanging outside the class. I will also take pictures and post them for those of you who can’t make it into the school regularly. What the children didn’t sort out onto our color posters, we let them pick thru and decide what should go on our class murals. The class murals are turning out great, each child has had the opportunity to work on each mural that we’ve created. (If your child was gone this week they can add to the murals and color posters this week) They are creating some colorful and unique works of art!! Which by the way will be up for auction at the school Carnival.

Gift Card Basket for the morning class and a Sweet Treat Basket for the afternoon class. We would like to have those items by the 10th at the latest. Thank you all so much for all that you do to make our school wonderful!!
The Hough Parade
The Hough Parade is parade that takes place downtown Vancouver on St. Patrick’s Day. Our school is going to walk in it this year, which I am very pleased with the sense of community and we get to wear our purple shirts . Purple and green go together right ? We will release at 11:30 that day so everyone wishing to participate or watch the parade may. We will meet on the corner of McLoughlin & Daniels Streets at 12:00 to check-in. The parade begins at 12:30. The theme is Yes We Can. There will be no afternoon class that day as we will all walk in the parade. Parents will need to accompany their kids if they are walking with our group. You can bring strollers or wagons, maybe even decorated ones!
The Carnival
The Carnival is next Thursday March 12th from 5 – 8. This is an inexpensive fun family night. There will be two bounce houses, a treasure dig, fishing game, face painting and a photographer will be there to take your family picture! Dinner will be served from 5-7 and will include hot dog, juice/water, and a cookie. Presale tickets for the meals and games will be on sale March 4th, 5th, and 6th during preschool hours. Presale ticket prices are:
Meals will be $5.00 ($6.00 at the door)
Game tickets 5 for $1.00 (4 for $1.00 at the door)
The bounce houses will be 2 tickets all other games will only be 1 ticket.

This Week in the Sunshine Class
This is a busy week. We will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ Birthday by cooking green eggs and ham. We will be reading of course Green Eggs and Ham, & Hop on Pop, and One fish two fish. We will create some green eggs and ham art and play fish bingo. We will also finish our murals. In the middle of all of this the Humane Society is coming to our school ( Wednesday & Thursday) to visit the classrooms and talk about animal safety. AG is the volunteer that brings in Cooper, her very well trained dog, and the children learn how to react around strange dogs. It is a very helpful and informative visit. If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Brown Bags…..
We would like the children to bring items back in the bag that we can sort into color or shape or add to a class mural. I will have an example of items on a board that I have in my brown bag displayed on our board Tuesday. In my brown bag I have a marble, ribbon, a sticker, a photo negative and some scrapbook letters. (These items won’t be returned so make sure they aren’t too valuable.) We will create three murals discussing which art process we want to start with and then add to it. I will group the canvas by the children that come MWF, TH, and afternoon. Each group will get to start a canvas and then we will switch with the other group. So all the groups will add to each canvas! I’m very excited about the process of this.

We will extend the Click Clack Moo series by reading another book by Doreen Cronin Thump, Quack, Moo . In this book the cows paint the barn and paint pictures of cows on the side of the barn, so we will finish decorating our barn. We are also going to start the process of sorting our bags and creating our murals.

Click Clack Moo
It’s finally here! So here’s the lowdown, the play starts at 9:45 & 11:45, they will seat us no later than 9:30 & 11:30 as a group so it is very important to arrive early and allow time to park and walk to the theater. You all received maps with the smart park address. (I would give it to you again but my map is at school). Please take your child to the restroom before the seat us. And just FYI all the children that are attending are four (or at least that’s what they think). There is no school on this Thursday & Friday, the days of the play.

A note from the teacher
It has been a great week! The children loved learning about nocturnal animals. I’m sure if you ask them they would sing the bat song for you.
It was wonderful to see you all at the school Read In and the Dad’s Breakfast. Thank you all for squeezing it in to your busy schedules. If you haven’t seen the All School Art projects that we created I think they will be in the main foyer by the preschool office. Our class worked on the one that looks a little more chaotic.
In the weeks following our class is going to begin to work on some art creations of our own. We will start off by sending a brown bag home with each child this week. We would like the children to bring items back in the bag that we can sort into color or shape or add to a class mural. (These items won’t be returned so make sure they aren’t too valuable.) Love is in the air, but there’s always love in the sunshine class!! So you know how Valentine’s Day goes…. Hearts, Candy and flowers!! We will have all of them!! We will make some art out of heart patterns, do some math with heart candies, and see our flowers turn colors!! As for the Valentine Parties, we will play some class games and exchange valentines and eat some yummy treats!! If you would just send 12 valentines with your children we will play a game passing them out. This is great practice for your child to write their name on the cards (no need to write the receiving child’s name, just your child’s name.)

What a blast bowling was, the children all seemed to enjoy it and I think the parents had a good time too! The purple shirts were a hit as well, some of the Teddy Bear Parents even commented on how great they looked.
So a heads up on the Valentine Celebrations, we will have a class party and I will have a sign up sheet for food but we won’t make a huge deal of parents coming just because I don’t want anyone to feel bad if their adults can’t be there. (We have the Click Clack Moo Field Trip the next week and I know some parents have to schedule it all in ) The children can bring valentines for all their friends. We basically have 12 children in each class, so to make it easy they can sign their names on the valentines but not address them. If your child has started to write their name this is great practice. The children will decorate bags to keep their valentines in. I will have the children come up with a food list, we have started the voting process. We vote on a lot of decisions to be made, the children love it and we learn some math in doing so.
We have something that was just added to the school calendar that I want you all to be aware of, The Family Read In on February 5th at 5:30 – 7:00. We will also be unveiling some All School Murals that we have been working on since the beginning of the year. We had several different canvas’ visit our class rooms and we each added some new art medium to them and I can’t wait to see the masterpiece that they have turned into.J I would really like to do this with just our class, with our morning and afternoon class. I will have each class start one and then go back and forth adding to it and expressing our ideas with each other as we go.

I just wanted to thank you all for making Veronica’s farewell easy. She was very torn and you all made her feel good, thank you. We will have a substitute in our class until we find the right fit for our class. We will carry on as usual and the children should make an easy transition. As for the Spanish that we have been learning, we will continue with what I have learned and go from there. The word wall will be the main change in that area.

School News
The fundraising committee for our school has an opening and needs your help. If you can help, they meet the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 9:30 in the Bethel room. I just want to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the parents for the hard work and dedication to our school!!
A note from the teacher
Thank you to all of you for a great first week back and helping with our New Year’s Celebrations!! We had a fun time playing games and eating some delicious foodJ.
Teacher Veronica and I wanted to thank you all for the wonderful cards and thoughtful gifts during the holiday season. They were very thoughtful and we really appreciate being remembered, thank you.
I have been trying to book a field trip to the Fire Station and was notified that is not going to be possible this year. Fire District 6 has changed their policy and wont do field trip for schools out of their district and Vancouver Fire District doesn’t allow children under the age of five on their field trips. So that’s where the bowling field trip comes in to play. The children will have a blast and it will be nice and warm inside. So mark your calendars for January 22nd & 23rd for bowling at Crosley Lanes at 9:30 for morning classes and 12:30 for the afternoon classes. The cost will be $2.00 a person. As with any field trip, we will meet there and parents stay and play.

This Week in the Sunshine Class
We are exploring winter this week. We will be creating a winter scene and going for a snowy drive through some shaving crème. We will be playing in some fake snow and have a snowball fight with paper snowballs. We will have a snowflake hunt and talk about how snowflakes are all different just like we are. We will be reading some great books about snowflakes and snowy days. We will also be playing a mitten pattern game and a mitten matching game, matching Upper Case Letter mittens and Lower Case Letter Mittens.

A note from the teacher
Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed their break and all the snow. It was fun having a white Christmas but it really messed up our party plans,
so …..
Our Family Holiday Party that is now our New Year’s Party is this week on Thursday and Friday at 11:00 am for the morning class and 2:15 pm for the afternoon class. We will have a book exchange for the children. The book should be under $10, gender neutral, and wrapped. The children love getting to pick a new book to take with them, you might want to talk with them about the fact that they aren’t getting the book that they bring but they will get a new one.
Since it’s snowing while I write this if the Vancouver School District is closed or on a 2 hour late start, our school is cancelled for the day. You can call the school for updated info at 693-5614 and I will send out an email as soon as I find out if our schedule has been affected

This Week in the Sunshine Class
This week we are celebrating the start of a new year! So we will talk about the different months in a year and what happens in those months, like different types of weather, seasons, and holidays. We will explore winter weather next week . We will be making some New Year’s Party decorations and we will also be making foil prints. We will create some textured art and make a letter N collage.
Word Wall
For the next two weeks will be talking about the letter Nn. So look for items that begin with the letter N for our word wall. This is a great activity to share with your child and it gets them interested in letter recognition.
